The Winter Korps Arkanists were created after revelations of widespread infernal corruption led to the Greylords Covenant being dissolved by imperial edict. Most of its members were imprisoned or sentenced to death, while those spared were tasked with rebuilding the empire’s arcane assets.

With many Khadorans gifted with magic now confined or facing execution, the surviving practitioners sought new tools that would let even the uninitiated work simple arcane formulae. This effort gave rise to the Winter Korps Arkanists.

Equipped with experimental apparatus, they can produce rote arcane effects, but the devices are noted to be prone to volatile and potentially catastrophic failure. As a result, the Arkanists are regarded as a measure of last resort.
