Roman commanders, being men of good political standing and often immense personal wealth, would usually camp in far more lavish style than their troops. While providing increased personal comfort, their large tents also served as places to hold meetings and plan their next moves, as well as ‘entertain’ captured enemy commanders or receive diplomats and messengers. If a commander’s tent was captured, the lucky soldiers looting it could expect to find plenty of high-quality ‘goodies’ to enjoy, making it a prime prize in the sacking of an enemy camp.
